Instead, the studio has tapped Garth Davis to take the helm. Davis may seem like a peculiar choice for Tron 3 , as his previous efforts — Lion , Mary Magdalene, and the miniseries Top of the Lake — are all character-driven dramas.
Before we all start getting too excited about Tron 3 , there is one important caveat to mention. According to Deadline , the film hasn't officially been greenlit yet.
They do note that Davis being attached to direct after so many years of stagnancy surrounding the project is a good sign that it will go forward, but as of now, the movie is still in the earliest and most fragile stages of development.
All this, of course, means that there's currently no release date in sight. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that we'll be seeing Tron 3 before , or maybe even While that's not necessarily the best news, we waited decades for the second installment , so a few more years holding out for a third should be a breeze.
One last note of pure speculation, but July 9, will mark the 40th anniversary of Tron 's original theatrical release. Just saying.

Other than Leto, there haven't been any other casting announcements. The big isomorphic algorithm in the room is whether or not cast members from the previous films will return for the threequel.
After all, Jeff Bridges came back after nearly three decades to reprise his role from the original film in Tron: Legacy. We'll have to wait for official word to know for sure, but we're guessing he won't be making another resurgence in the digital world, as spoiler alert he died at the end of Tron: Legacy.
And based on what we do know about the third film's plot, we're not expecting the first sequel's other stars, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, to make appearances, either.
