What was Vanessa but another Victorian heroine who had to suffer for being different? Ah, well… we could wonder all we want at what Logan was attempting to do.
I would argue that Logan, while re-inventing some of the characters from the literature of the Victorian era, fell into the same constricted societal judgements of all persons, but especially of women, who are different from that which society expects.
I think she is one of the finest characters ever created, and the series is one of the best ever written. In case anyone thought that Lucifer might scoop her up as she attempted to avoid the consequences of her having chosen, in life, his earthly brother of Darkness, Dracula.

Seward simply questioned Vanessa, e. At other times, more poignantly, Vanessa begged to be brought out of the hypnotic trance, and Dr. Seward, who had even burned Vanessa on the back of the hand with a cigarette, could not awaken her.
Each time Dr. Seward was with Vanessa, the two of them were physically closer, symbolic of Dr. At one point, they even grasped hands, indicating that Dr.
Seward told Vanessa that the two of them would get through this emotionally traumatizing event together. After the Orderly offered to try and help Vanessa by simply listening to her, their relationship exploded in completely unexpected ways.

In a super-creepy scene, he got down on the floor of the padded room, and, like some sort of snake or scorpion, crawled toward Vanessa — who crawled toward him in the same way.

Though other characters in the series have seen her levitate, heard her speak in tongues, and listened in shock while she revealed very private things about their own lives to them, no one, as far as I can recall, has actually seen Lucifer other than Vanessa.

John Clare, previously called The Creature, has often been more humane and decent than most of the human characters in the series.
Not long after, Vanessa has a vision of Mina, who begs her former friend to find and save her. Determined to find Mina, and understand her own powers, Vanessa seeks out the Cut-Wife of Ballantree Moor Patti Lupone , an infamous witch living in the moors of England.
Under her tutelage, Vanessa learns about her own powers and others who would desire them. To these ends, Evelyn seduces a lord and convinces him to arrange a mob to execute the Cut-Wife.
Her plan is successful, and Vanessa watches her mentor burn, before being branded herself. She leaves the Moor soon after, traumatized by what she has seen.
She offers Ethan a job as a hired gun, which he accepts. They are unable to find Mina, but enlist Dr. Victor Frankenstein into their cause.
As they continue their search for Mina, Vanessa pursues a romantic relationship with the enigmatic Dorian Gray Reeve Carney. During a sexual encounter with Dorian, Vanessa becomes possessed by Lucifer once more.
She becomes feral and violent, and needs to be restrained. For a month, she battles the Devil inside of her, and he appears to her under many different visages.
Malcolm implores Vanessa to reach out to Mina, but she is unsuccessful. Eventually, a priest comes to give a dying Vanessa her last rites , but she attacks him.
In a moment of clarity, she begs Ethan to kill her. Instead, he holds a pendant of St. Jude to her forehead, and chants in Latin , begging for divine intervention.
The exorcism is successful, and Vanessa collapses. When she wakes up, she claims to know where Mina is. The group finds a horde of vampires at a theater, and fight through them.
Mina reveals herself, and initially seems happy to see them. However, she quickly turns violent and attempts to bite Vanessa, claiming to be delivering her to her Master.
Malcolm shoots Mina, claiming Vanessa is his only daughter. The two are distraught over Mina's death, but bond over their grief. Vanessa seeks out a priest and asks for a formal exorcism.
Once the priest asks her if she truly wants to be normal, however, she apparently changes her mind and refuses. Vanessa and Ethan are beset upon by Nightcomers: witches in service to Lucifer.
Vanessa becomes paranoid, and the group goes to great lengths to protect her. During this time, she also befriends John Clare, a homeless man who she does not recognize as the reanimated orderly from her imprisonment in the Banning Clinic.
After fleeing back to Ballentree Moor, Vanessa and Ethan are called back to London when the leader of the Nightcomers, Evelyn Poole, takes Malcolm captive in her manor.
Vanessa steals away to face the witch alone, and is confronted by a ventriloquist dummy made in her own likeness. The dummy, controlled by Lucifer, tries to convince Vanessa to join him, but she refuses and destroys it.
Evelyn grows hysterical and attempts to kill Vanessa, but is intercepted by Ethan and killed. Despite her victory, Vanessa is more lonely than ever.
She offers her love to Ethan, but he refuses and turns himself into the police. Sir Malcolm leaves to escort Sembene's remains back to Africa.
Victor descends further into drug addiction. Spiraling into depression and struggling with the guilt over her own sins, Vanessa turns away from God.
She takes the cross from her wall, and throws it in the fire. Having spiraled into a deep depression, Vanessa is convinced to see Joan Clayton Lupone , a psychiatrist who she is shocked to see greatly resembles her late friend, the Cut-Wife.
Vanessa also falls in love with Dr. Alexander Sweet Christian Camargo , a zoologist whom she met at a museum. Upon deducing that Dr.
Sweet is in fact Dracula, however, Vanessa resolves to kill him. However, upon their confrontation, Dracula asks Vanessa to join him in bringing about the Apocalypse , and promises to love her unconditionally and eternally.
With Vanessa finally becoming the Mother of Evil, darkness falls upon London and a plague spreads. Once Ethan and Malcolm return to London to confront her and Dracula, she begs Ethan to kill her and end the darkness that has overtaken the world.
The two finally kiss and declare their love for each other. Vanessa's death breaks Dracula's hold on London, and his plague is lifted.
She is buried in London. Malcolm and Ethan are despondent after her death, but find solace knowing that Vanessa finally found peace in death.
John Clare, who Vanessa had briefly befriended, watches her funeral and weeps at her grave. Unlike many characters on the show, Vanessa Ives is completely original to the series and has never appeared before.

Thus, my reaction to the line. End Note. Now Vanessa knows that Dr. Sweet and Dracula — the mild-mannered milquetoast who kept forgetting her name, and the Dark Master of the earthly realm who has been seeking her — are one and the same.
Armed in a low-cut gown and sporting a pistol, Vanessa returns to the museum to confront Sweet. She talks to him first. Oh, Vanessa, when will you learn not to listen to the Darkness?

And what a scary return it was. Viewers already knew some of what had happened to Vanessa there, and it was horrifying. Told this by one of the Lost Boys in an earlier episode this season,.
Vanessa insisted that Dr. Seward Patti LuPone, below L hypnotize her so that she could remember the events in the white room: a padded cell.
The first thing Vanessa recalled was that she was alone there in the white room. Still, the chemistry between Green and Kinnear, who had virtually the entire episode to themselves, set the screen on fire.
First the Orderly just wanted Vanessa to eat. He resisted her when she took off her gown and tried to seduce him, although he did begin to return her kisses and put his arms around her.
This fits with his character even as the Creature, who is consistently one of the most humane and decent characters in Penny Dreadful , despite his technically being a monster.
The development of the relationship between the Orderly and Vanessa alone was worth an entire episode. Throughout the episode, Dr. Sometimes, Dr.
Seward simply questioned Vanessa, e. At other times, more poignantly, Vanessa begged to be brought out of the hypnotic trance, and Dr.
Seward, who had even burned Vanessa on the back of the hand with a cigarette, could not awaken her. Each time Dr. Seward was with Vanessa, the two of them were physically closer, symbolic of Dr.
At one point, they even grasped hands, indicating that Dr. Seward told Vanessa that the two of them would get through this emotionally traumatizing event together.
After the Orderly offered to try and help Vanessa by simply listening to her, their relationship exploded in completely unexpected ways.
He suggested that she tell him anyway. Understandably, Vanessa freaked. He continued speaking to her. As Lucifer. His shadow turned into a giant snake and wrapped itself around Vanessa.
In a super-creepy scene, he got down on the floor of the padded room, and, like some sort of snake or scorpion, crawled toward Vanessa — who crawled toward him in the same way.
I am the Dragon. My name is Dracula. The other rebel-brother-angel was cast to earth, to reign in darkness and to feed off humans and their blood: his name is Dracula.
Though viewers know that Dracula is also the milquetoast Dr. Sweet is, in reality, Dracula. Then the scene snapped to the Orderly, sitting in the chair beside the bed, asking Vanessa why Lucifer would want her.
Though other characters in the series have seen her levitate, heard her speak in tongues, and listened in shock while she revealed very private things about their own lives to them, no one, as far as I can recall, has actually seen Lucifer other than Vanessa.
That way, Vanessa does not know whether or not she has imagined the visitation. So, what does he really look like?
Neither Vanessa nor the viewers know what Lucifer himself looks like. Then she started her speaking-in-tongues routine and levitated right up off the floor.

Finding the predominantly Chinese neighborhood where he and his family rented lodgings — and briefly glimpsing Vanessa and Dr. Sweet together on the streets — Clare went into the room he shared with his family.
Then he set off in search of them. He found his wife and son, who is dying from consumption, in another rented room, spied on them from above in a homage to the novel, where the Creature spies on a family from an adjoining structure , wept at their condition, then stole a watch from a rich man, and left it for the wife to find.
John Clare, previously called The Creature, has often been more humane and decent than most of the human characters in the series.
Last night, his weeping over his wife and son, as he himself remained hidden from them, revealed his suffering. At this point, viewers are still not aware of how John Clare died in the first place: only that Frankenstein re-animated him, then abandoned him in terror.
The police responded with violence. Thinking, I suppose, that Lily wants the same thing as the suffragettes, Jessica commented on them. Dorian and Lily presented Justine with the bound and gagged man who had taken Justine when she was 12, used her sexually, then hired her out after he tired of her himself.
Justine, it seems, has almost as much rage as Lily. Dorian kissed her. Cut to the three of them in bed, covered in blood, having an intense — and apparently quite satisfactory — sexual encounter.
The three had sex, covered in the blood of their victim, then laid out the plan to conquer the world. Either way, Justine, who is neither re-animated, like Lily, nor living an abnormal life, like Dorian, is in for a penny, in for a pound, as they say.

To the surprise of viewers, Vanessa remembered the face of the orderly who brought her meals while she was locked in the padded cell: it was none other than the former self of the Creature, John Clare Rory Kinnear.
We know he must have died: otherwise, he could not have been brought back to life by Frankenstein. Now we wonder if Vanessa herself, who is known to have been quite violent during her time before, during, and sometimes after, her stay in the sanatorium, is responsible for the death of John Clare.

However, she quickly turns violent and attempts to bite Vanessa, claiming to be delivering her to her Master. Malcolm shoots Mina, claiming Vanessa is his only daughter.
The two are distraught over Mina's death, but bond over their grief. Vanessa seeks out a priest and asks for a formal exorcism.
Once the priest asks her if she truly wants to be normal, however, she apparently changes her mind and refuses. Vanessa and Ethan are beset upon by Nightcomers: witches in service to Lucifer.
Vanessa becomes paranoid, and the group goes to great lengths to protect her. During this time, she also befriends John Clare, a homeless man who she does not recognize as the reanimated orderly from her imprisonment in the Banning Clinic.
After fleeing back to Ballentree Moor, Vanessa and Ethan are called back to London when the leader of the Nightcomers, Evelyn Poole, takes Malcolm captive in her manor.
Vanessa steals away to face the witch alone, and is confronted by a ventriloquist dummy made in her own likeness.
The dummy, controlled by Lucifer, tries to convince Vanessa to join him, but she refuses and destroys it. Evelyn grows hysterical and attempts to kill Vanessa, but is intercepted by Ethan and killed.
Despite her victory, Vanessa is more lonely than ever. She offers her love to Ethan, but he refuses and turns himself into the police.
Sir Malcolm leaves to escort Sembene's remains back to Africa. Victor descends further into drug addiction. Spiraling into depression and struggling with the guilt over her own sins, Vanessa turns away from God.
She takes the cross from her wall, and throws it in the fire. Having spiraled into a deep depression, Vanessa is convinced to see Joan Clayton Lupone , a psychiatrist who she is shocked to see greatly resembles her late friend, the Cut-Wife.
Vanessa also falls in love with Dr. Alexander Sweet Christian Camargo , a zoologist whom she met at a museum. Upon deducing that Dr.
Sweet is in fact Dracula, however, Vanessa resolves to kill him. However, upon their confrontation, Dracula asks Vanessa to join him in bringing about the Apocalypse , and promises to love her unconditionally and eternally.
With Vanessa finally becoming the Mother of Evil, darkness falls upon London and a plague spreads. Once Ethan and Malcolm return to London to confront her and Dracula, she begs Ethan to kill her and end the darkness that has overtaken the world.
The two finally kiss and declare their love for each other. Vanessa's death breaks Dracula's hold on London, and his plague is lifted.
She is buried in London. Malcolm and Ethan are despondent after her death, but find solace knowing that Vanessa finally found peace in death. John Clare, who Vanessa had briefly befriended, watches her funeral and weeps at her grave.
Unlike many characters on the show, Vanessa Ives is completely original to the series and has never appeared before.
She was created by writer John Logan specifically for the show. He defended his decision, answering when asked why Vanessa had to die, "Because she's a character desperately in need of peace, and the mortal realm was not going to give it to her.
The Mother of Evil, the all-powerful demon capable of destroying mankind, was also created specifically for the series by Logan. She is described as a prophesied god-like being capable of freeing Lucifer or Dracula, and overthrowing Heaven at their side.
There is no such character in Biblical Lore , although the Mother does appear to have some similarities to the Whore of Babylon.
Additionally, throughout the series, the Mother is called by several other names, such as Amunet, Lilith, and Hela.
All of these women do indeed exist in different religious mythologies, but they do not all serve the same purpose as in the series.
Logan took creative liberties with the religious sources, creating an entirely original character out of different established religious figures.
