Their catch rate is just stupid. I'll dread the day Sudowoodoo or Nosepass get featured in an event, unless they use Bonsly for the former.
But you gotta walk Bonsly like 10 or 15 km before you can evolve one. Though I guess you'd probably only need to do that for one.
When they just came out they were kinda normal. I got 80 candy and thought it would be enough. Didn't catch them anymore.
Then the evolution came out and I saw it needed candy. Tried to catch them and they were so hard now. Like why. I think that it is more of a way to show that they are special pokemon.
If they were easy to catch they wouldn't seem as unique. You could argue that starters are so rare in the Main Game that there was only 1 specimen available throughout the whole game.
There were some exceptions though, like Froakie So making it incredibly hard to catch makes sense to some extent. They used to be rare back in the old days of the Pidgey and Rattata but Niantic never adjusted the catch rates accordingly afterwards.
Venasaur, Torterra and Sceptile are still pretty good in and against gyms. I usually throw after they have attacked. So my ball lands right when the catch circle appears.

I've found that basic pokeballs are useless with this event. Just go with Great Balls from the get go.
