The answer is well yeah, the idea bin is pretty empty but a new take on some old material goes a long way. Shin Gojira which is Godzilla Resurgence to us English speakers is not going to be like any Godzilla movie that has come before it bar one: the original, Gojira.

Every single Godzilla movie that Toho has produced up until now has had one thing in common, it is either a sequel or in a line of sequels related to the original film.

What gets me excited is this latest film is a remake of the original, being done by the original studio.

Like a mother telling her two small children in a burning alley that they are all going to die dark. Poisoned water dark. Flesh melting off bones dark.

So what we essentially going to be expecting, the rest of the Godzilla fans and I, is a very grim movie relative to the Hollywood remake, and quite frankly, any other Godzilla movie to date.

In addition to the general aura of darkness that comes from restarting the series, Toho has sprinkled a few hints to the media at large as to what to expect.

Firstly, they are not being shy with their Godzilla. A special thanks to artist and avid kaiju fan Matt Frank for allowing us to show his rendition of the newest incarnation of Godzilla!

Gozilla wasn't necessarily the primary focus of the movie, but he was in it enough to give you the sense that he was actually meant to be a part of the movie and not just a title to give it "street cred".

What I actually liked best about the movie was how it pretty much perfectly mirrored the original Godzilla. In each, Godzilla and the movie as a whole actually represent Japan and it's current state and sense of self.

Rathael Oct 16, They have tapped one of the most famous Anime directors Hideaki Anno for the honor, as he has called himself a big Godzilla fan.

Shin Godzilla is a very difficult movie to review. It is a very complicated movie that touches on multiple facets of the Godzilla mythos, while at the same time, is trying to explain and bring this franchise to the new masses, and the new fans.

Where the movie shines, is in showing Godzilla's power and misunderstanding. That is very well portrayed in the beginning of the movie, when we are first introduced to this new creature.

Movie is more focused however on dealing with this new threat, and that in itself is not a problem. Problem however arises as one could say is that there are just too many moving parts to follow, lot of which are not necessary not so much for the plot of the movie, but are not necessarily needed to be introduced to.

Movie technically has four or five main players which movie should focus on, yet for some reason, they are getting away from that and are introducing a slew of bit players that honestly, we don't find out anything about except their name and position.

Yet, that's where in lies the problem, about twenty to thirty minutes is almost spent introducing these bit players, where the focus should be on the Godzilla itself and or the main cast, or dealing with the international crisis that the Godzilla is posing.

There are lot of nods from previous movies, and Godzilla's evolution is done really well, even though some of the CGI movie in the movie falters in some parts.

That's where in lies one of the other problems, partially the charm of the old Godzilla movies was the fact these were actors in suits, and as cheesy it looked, it had a sense of connection to it, where as this movie is fully focusing on CGI, and even when they try to make it look like a suit, its more uncomfortable than fun.

The fight in the movie is however done really well, and it was definitely a highlight of the movie itself. And that is not to say the plot of the movie was bad, it really was not.

However the biggest problem of it, was that it was disjointed, and was really focusing on things it really shouldn't focus on.

There are scenes in the movie where they are going on intricate details of how to deal with the creature, and that scene goes on into chemistry class level of detail, where everyday viewer will just get lost, and might even lose interest in the movie itself.

If the movie itself focused on the international crisis and the creature, which was the main premise of the movie, it would have been lot lot better.

However it ended being weighed down by unnecessary characterizations and explanations which really shouldn't be in there.

This movie was not as fun as it should have been, and as much it pains me to say, Anno should stick to anime, as live action does not seem to be his forte, and maybe its not all his fault, but ultimately he was the director and the movie being good or bad, he does get burdened with the responsibility of the end result.
